Fabric tells you everything. Heavy fading means the UV stabilisers are spent — the cloth may still hang there, but it is no longer blocking meaningful radiation. Look for brittleness, fraying at corners and along seams, and any tearing around fixing points. Persistent sagging that re-tensioning no longer cures means the fabric has stretched beyond recovery. Quality HDPE typically serves 8–12 years in the Gulf; if yours is in that range and showing these signs, it is time.

It is worth photographing your shade once a year from the same angles. Gradual decline is easy to miss day to day, but a yearly photo makes fading, sagging and rust progression obvious at a glance. Keep the installation paperwork with those photos too — knowing the fabric brand, grade and warranty terms makes the repair-versus-replace decision far simpler when the time comes.

Check the Structure and Fixings

Inspect steelwork for rust breakthrough at welds, cut edges and base plates — especially in coastal Emirates. Check turnbuckles, shackles and corner rings for corrosion and movement, and look for any leaning posts or cracked foundation plinths. Structural issues are a safety matter, not a cosmetic one: a compromised frame in a shamal storm risks vehicles and people alike.

Repair, Re-Fabric or Replace?

Sound steel with tired fabric usually just needs re-fabrication — a cost-effective renewal that makes the shade look and perform like new. Corroded frames or outdated layouts justify full replacement, often with better designs and materials than were available a decade ago.
